Ya que este zine esta por terminar, nosotros como editores nos preguntamos, ¿cuales son nuestros últimos pensamientos en este proceso y nuestros últimos comentarios? Esta pregunta se contesto en varias conversaciones en la cual incluía cual era nuestra parte en el sexismo, nuestro compromiso a ser aliados a las mujeres y, como todo esto esta impactando nuestras comunidades. Y esta fue nuestra respuesta:
La idea de este zine nos hizo ver como es que a veces pensamos que estábamos excluidos de malos comportamientos por ser quien somos y por como hemos sido socializados. Pensando acerca del sexismo, empezamos a reflejar en nuestra relaciones y amistades y nos dimos cuenta que hay cosas que se nos ha quedado adentro de nosotros y que hemos respondido con nuestra socialización sexista. Es por eso que nosotros pensamos que es necesario ser consiente de nuestra masculinidad y como no usar nuestro privilegio al costo de la mujer. Como hombres de color entendemos que el racismo nos oprime pero también entendemos que beneficiamos por nuestro privilegio masculino. Estamos en el proceso de deconstruir ese privilegio y ahora es algo que esta constantemente en nuestras mentes. Ahora vamos a hablar con otros hombres y tratar de retar y educar en lo que hemos aprendido, porque si no retamos las palabras y acciones sexistas, nosotros estaremos contribuyendo a la continuación de un movimiento sexista.
También, no es algo bueno que tuvimos que al empezar a escribir este zine, nuestra motivación fue la realización que estábamos lastimando a las mujeres y también de ser lastimados nosotros mismos por el sistema del patriarcado. Pero ahora sentimos que nos hemos familiarizado con ideas feministas y platicado con nuestros amigos acerca del patriarcado y de como hemos sido afectados. A través de nuestros errores, nosotros nos hemos comprometido a practicar y vivir con el entendimiento de apoyar a las necesidades de nuestras compañeras y de todas las mujeres luchando contra el patriarcado.
Nuestra liberación personal esta atada al de la liberación de la mujer y al de la liberación de todo el pueblo. Trabajando en este zine nos ha ayudado entender mejor que es lo que tiene que llevarse acabo para ser un aliado a la mujer y entender nuestro sexismo. Entendiendo estas conexiones en como hemos participado en el sexismo ha sido un proceso muy duro porque tuvimos que confrontar el como nuestras acciones detuvieron el desarrollo de personas y el como perpetuábamos el sexismo. Ahora sentimos que podemos empezar a luchar en contra el patriarcado, aunque es complicado, pues para algunos de nosotros es algo nuevo.
Nosotros esperamos que este zine anime a todos los que están en su propio camino de liberación a entender que la liberación de todas las opresiones esta conectada a la liberación de todo el pueblo. Al mismo tiempo, tenemos que recordar que el trabajo no acaba con este zine, con la música, con pláticas, etc… sino es como vivimos y tratamos a nuestras compañeras, familias, parejas y hermanas. Como raza (pueblo nativo) hemos aguantado 515 años de colonización, al igual que muchos ataques físicos y mentales con el intento de dividirnos, sin la excepción del abuso a la mujer. Nosotr@s no podemos verdaderamente resistir la colonización y la ocupación de la supremacía blanca con abuso interpersonal como el sexismo, homofobia y transfobia presente en nuestra gente. Nosotros entendemos que necesitamos luchar en contra todos los sistemas de opresión desde afuera y desde adentro.
As the zine comes to a close, we as editors asked ourselves, “What are our final thoughts and last comments on this whole process?” This question was answered over several conversations in which we talked about sexism, our parts in it, our commitment to being allies to womyn, and how all this impacts our communities. This is our response.
The idea for this zine got us looking at how sometimes we think that we are exempt from certain behaviors because of who we are and how we’ve been socialized. Thinking about sexism, we started reflecting on our relationships and friendships and realized there were things that we internalized and acted on in response to sexist socialization. That’s why we think it is necessary for us to be aware of our masculinity and how not to use our privilege at the expense of womyn. As men of color we understand that racism oppresses us but we also benefit from masculine privilege. We are in the process of deconstructing this privilege, and now it is something that’s constantly on our minds. Now we will be talking to men and trying to challenge and educate on what we know so far, because if we don't challenge sexist words or actions, we are only contributing to the continuation of a sexist movement.
Also, it is not a good thing that as we began to write this zine, our motivation came from realizing we were hurting womyn and also from being hurt because of the system of patriarchy. But we feel that now we have been familiarizing ourselves on feminist ideas and talking to friends about patriarchy and how we have been affected by it. Through our mistakes, we are committed to practicing and living our understanding of the need to support our female comrades and all women in the struggle against patriarchy.
Our personal liberation is tied to womyn’s liberation and all people’s liberation. Working on this zine has helped us to understand better what it takes to be an ally to womyn and to understand our sexism. Understanding these connections of how we have participated in sexism has been a hard process because we had to confront how our actions held people back and perpetuated sexism. We feel now that we can start fighting against patriarchy, even when complicated, since this is new to some of us.
We hope that this zine encourages those who are on the path of liberating themselves to understand that all liberation against oppression is connected to other people’s liberation. At the same time, we should remember that the work doesn’t stop with zines, with music, with talking, etc. It is in how we live and treat our comrades, familias, parejas y hermanas. As raza (native peoples), we have endured 515 years of colonialism, along with many mental and physical attacks intended to divide us, the abuse of women being no exception. We cannot truly resist colonization and white supremacist occupation with interpersonal abuse like sexism, homophobia and transphobia present in our peoples. We understand that we need to fight all systems of oppression on the outside and from within.
