I really love the idea of this, and enjoyed reading it. However there is the flip side of the issue... I come across over and over as a women, and that is a reversed sexism towards men. It frustrates me because being a women does not make you a "goddess", each and every individual (m and f) has to overcome and evolve into a higher being above gender and race. It seems all to common these days for women to assume that they have the right to hate on any/all men, and due to their gender believe that they are above men. Is being a bitch ok just because we have hormones?? Or should we take gender as a challenge and overcome the obstacles that physicality and society have set in front of us? If we don't then we are not much better than the man that hollas at the ladies on the street. In fact I feel it is hypocritical and makes women look worse. I feel this is an issue NO ONE addresses when discussing gender and feminism.
Thank you peatoonya for reading the zine! im glad you liked it. The issue that you brought up is could be really complex. I know that a lot of times when men have callout reverse sexism is with the intention of defending their privilege and power. There is a big men's movement in the US that blames feminism for the "feminization and emasculation of men" has one of them put it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fX8KWSuEhIc&feature=related
The same goes for racism… for example a lot of white people are raising the reverse racism flag to take away affirmative action. I think is actually really hard to reverse any system that has run like that for a long time. It is true that that in any relationship there could be sexist/abusive dynamics even in the queer community, women abusing women. But in the end I think it all stems out from the violence that men have cause in our society and the effects that patriarchy has had in all of us, whether one internalizes sexism, grow up learning to be a “real man”, wanting to hold power etc…
